Sizing & strength

Zip Tie Size Chart: What Size Cable Tie Do You Need?

Size a zip tie by the bundle first, then by the load. Measure around the bundle, divide by 3.14 to get its diameter, and pick a tie whose max bundle diameter is comfortably larger. As a rough guide, a 4 inch tie closes around about 3/4 inch, an 8 inch tie about 2 inches, a 14 inch tie about 4 inches and a 36 inch tie about 11 inches.

Sizing & strength

How Strong Are Zip Ties? Tensile Strength and Weight Capacity

Zip ties are rated by loop tensile strength: the minimum force a closed loop withstands before breaking in a controlled pull test. Common nylon ratings run from 18 lb for miniature ties to 50 lb standard, 120 lb heavy duty and 175 or 250 lb extra heavy duty. That rating is a breaking point, not a safe working load, so plan to use only a fraction of it.

Materials

Are Zip Ties UV Resistant? Choosing Ties for Outdoor Use

Only some zip ties are UV resistant. Black nylon ties made with carbon black, a UV stabilizer mixed into the resin, typically hold up far longer in sunlight. Natural white or clear nylon ties have no such protection and can turn chalky and brittle outdoors. For anything in the sun, choose ties sold as UV-stabilized, not just ties that happen to be black.

Buying

How to Choose Zip Ties: A Practical Buyer's Guide

Choose zip ties in this order: a length that fits the bundle with room to spare, a tensile strength well above the load, black UV-stabilized ties for anything outdoors, nylon 6/6 for most jobs, and a specialty type only when heat, food safety, reuse or corrosion demands it. Then compare cost per tie rather than pack price, and buy in bulk once a size proves itself.
